Great color portraits and heavy weight legends make the 1953 Topps Signed set a collectors favorite. The presence of Satchel Paige in his only card of the decade, coupled with a tough Jackie Robinson signature create quite a challenge. Collecting signed cards has
mostly been a niche hobby, related
to sports cards collecting only tangentially. Each spring, hundreds of
dedicated collectors would trek to Grapefruit League games in the hopes of
gaining some signatures. More enterprising collectors would dutifully track
down the home addresses of 1000s of former players, sending them cards to
sign and return. Back then of course, the value of the autograph was
primarily sentimental. A few collectors amassed massive collections of
signed cards - many of which have now been released into the market.
Auction houses are achieving record prices on these collections - the
"niche" hobby has moved mainstream!
